Exploring Offshore Hydrothermal Venting Using Low-Cost ROV and Photogrammetric Techniques: a Case Study from Milos Island, Greece

چکیده
The study utilises two emerging low-cost technologies, low cost Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) and underwater photogrammetry techniques (Structure from motion (SfM)) using off the shelf cameras, for 3D reconstruction of shallow hydrothermal vent sites around Paleochori Bay, Milos Island, Greece. Venting fields were Characterised through interactive bathymetry models produced from still images taken from camera onboard ROV flown over areas of interest in double raster pattern. This is the first time the shallow venting fields on Milos have been actively surveyed using the combined approach of ROV and photogrammetry. Areas were successfully surveyed and the bathymetry was reconstructed using SfM photogrammetry with a ~10 cm scale resolution. A diverse range of benthic habitats were surveyed and the resulting topographic models will act as a baseline for an established method, that given with positioning will provide further characterisation of the vent systems and any evolving seafloor morphology.

The pH and pCO2 dependence of sulfate reduction in shallow-sea hydrothermal CO2 – venting sediments (Milos Island, Greece)
Microbial sulfate reduction (SR) is a dominant process of organic matter mineralization in sulfate-rich anoxic environments at neutral pH. Recent studies have demonstrated SR in low pH environments, but investigations on the microbial activity at variable pH and CO2 partial pressure are still lacking. In this study, the effect of pH and pCO2 on microbial activity was investigated by incubation ...
متن کاملDiversity and phylogenetic analyses of bacteria from a shallow-water hydrothermal vent in Milos island (Greece)
Studies of shallow-water hydrothermal vents have been lagging behind their deep-sea counterparts. Hence, the importance of these systems and their contribution to the local and regional diversity and biogeochemistry is unclear. This study analyzes the bacterial community along a transect at the shallow-water hydrothermal vent system of Milos island, Greece. The abundance and biomass of the prok...
متن کاملSulfur and oxygen isotope insights into sulfur cycling in shallow-sea hydrothermal vents, Milos, Greece
Shallow-sea (5 m depth) hydrothermal venting off Milos Island provides an ideal opportunity to target transitions between igneous abiogenic sulfide inputs and biogenic sulfide production during microbial sulfate reduction. Seafloor vent features include large (>1 m(2)) white patches containing hydrothermal minerals (elemental sulfur and orange/yellow patches of arsenic-sulfides) and cells of su...
متن کاملSpatial heterogeneity of bacterial populations along an environmental gradient at a shallow submarine hydrothermal vent near Milos Island (Greece).
The spatial heterogeneity of bacterial populations at a shallow-water hydrothermal vent in the Aegean Sea close to the island of Milos (Greece) was examined at two different times by using acridine orange staining for total cell counts, cultivation-based techniques, and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis of PCR-amplified 16S rRNA gene fragments. Concurrent with measurements...
متن کاملThe mapping of hydrothermal alteration zones on the island of Lesvos, Greece using an integrated remote sensing dataset
The mapping of hydrothermal alteration zones associated with epithermal gold deposits on the island of Lesvos in Greece has been carried out using Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) satellite and ground remote sensing data. The initial analysis of the satellite data using the minimum noise fraction, matched filter and spectral unmixing techniques identified the altered rock outcrops clearly. The iden...
